Hungarian Driving licence -part I

After almost three months I have finally completed the online course for the category “B” Hungarian driving licence. It shouldn’t have taken that long to be honest, but I procrastinated for about a month and a little bit more because I was focusing on the excel course on coursera and also due to laziness. (If I want to be more honest, it was more of the later reason than the former, Haha)

It took me more than 10 years to finally register myself to a driving school and doing this. I have a driving licence back home but ever since I came here, I have never driven a car. I wonder if driving is like riding a bike – once you know how to ride they say, you can always ride a bike. With a little refresher practice perhaps. I suppose, I will find out soon enough.

I want to naturalize my licence but since Malaysia didn’t sign the Vienna convention traffic 1968 – our driving licence is not ‘recognized’, so I still have to do the theoretical and practical exams like someone who never had a driving licence. One major difference between doing from the beginning and naturalizing is that, it is not compulsory to go for 30 hours of practical driving lessons and no first aid course needed. Instead of 30 hours I am only required to do 2 hours of practice, which I already paid for. So we shall see if I need more than that later.

After more than 10 years, why now you ask? Budapest’s public transportation system is one of the best I’ve ever experienced, I could easily spend my entire life just taking the public transportation everywhere here. But the final “kick in the butt” was when my husband had to undergo a small surgery on his knee last October. He had to go to a hospital located in another city. He drove himself there and to come home he had to ask someone else to help drive him back. So I figured it is really about time for me to get the licence. Because one can never know when it is needed to help a family member in need, or I might gain a little bit more independence.

Today, I contacted the driving school to sign me up for the next theoretical exam. They say it may take about 2 -3 weeks. I am hoping it would be about 2 the most. I want to get over it as soon as I can.

Till then, I will update more later. πŸ™‚
